Dealing with bed bugs is an incredibly frustrating experience for any homeowner. The incessant itching, sleepless nights, and constant fear of the infestation spreading can take a toll on one’s peace of mind.
In the quest for relief, many turn to bed bug sprays found in supermarkets or seek professional help from pest controllers. However, while both spray for bed bugs, they each come with drawbacks that often leave homeowners plagued by these persistent pests.
Brands like Woolworths, Coles, and Bunnings offer these bed bug sprays, marketed as convenient remedies for an infestation. However, despite their accessibility, these sprays frequently fall short of providing effective, long-lasting relief. One of the primary reasons for the ineffectiveness of these sprays is their reliance on chemical formulas that may not effectively target the bugs hiding in cracks, crevices, and other hard-to-reach areas. While Woolworths bed bug spray might kill bed bugs on contact, they often fail to address the root of the infestation.
These insects are notorious for their elusive nature, often hiding in obscure places such as mattress seams, furniture joints, and electrical outlets. Spraying these areas with over-the-counter products like Coles bed bug spray may not guarantee sufficient coverage, even just spreading populations rather than killing them. While some homeowners may opt for supermarkets thinking they’ve found a bed bug spray that works, they may ultimately find themselves spending more money on repeated applications or resorting to professional help after realising the initial treatments were ineffective.
When supermarket sprays appear insufficient for tackling severe infestations, many homeowners turn to professional pest controllers for more robust solutions. Pest controllers often employ stronger chemical pesticides to eradicate bugs effectively. However, the risk of spraying poisonous substances around living spaces is significant.
The chemicals used by pest controllers can pose serious risks to residents, pets, and the environment, with pyrethroids, organophosphates, and neonicotinoids being linked to a range of health issues, including respiratory problems, skin irritation, neurological disorders, and even cancer. With the coverage pest controllers apply, it can also result in residual chemicals lingering long after treatment. This residual exposure can pose health risks to occupants, especially children and individuals with compromised immune systems.
While supermarket sprays and professional pest control services may offer temporary relief from infestations, the reality is that these solutions come with hidden costs. For homeowners relying on over-the-counter sprays, the need for repeated applications can quickly add up. Despite promises of efficacy, these sprays often fail to address the root cause of infestations. Over time, the financial and emotional burden of purchasing multiple cans of spray can become significant.
Similarly, professional pest control services may provide a more potent solution, but it also comes with costs. Many companies offer treatment plans that involve multiple visits and follow-up inspections to ensure efficacy, leaving homeowners locked into contracts with ongoing expenses. Moreover, there is the emotional toll of dealing with infestations is draining, encompassing the fear of being bitten, the disruption of daily routines, the potential of allergic reactions, and the stigma associated with infestations.
In conclusion, while supermarket sprays and professional pest control services may offer temporary relief from infestations, they often come with extra costs. Whether it’s the health risks associated with chemical pesticides or the financial burden of repeated treatments, homeowners must consider more sustainable, long-term solutions for effective control.
To effectively combat infestations, it’s crucial to understand the habits of these resilient pests. Bed bugs are nocturnal insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals while they sleep, typically hiding in cracks, crevices, and other secluded areas during the day. Their flattened bodies allow them to squeeze into tight spaces, making them notoriously difficult to eradicate.
Conventional bed bug sprays rely on chemical formulations designed to kill on contact. However, these sprays may not effectively penetrate the hiding spots where they congregate, leading to incomplete elimination. Moreover, many bed bugs have developed resistance to common pesticides over time, further complicating control efforts. Furthermore, the bugs exhibit “thigmotaxis,” meaning they stay in close contact with surfaces, making it challenging to target them directly, as they avoid treated areas or quickly move to untreated surfaces, even spreading the population.
Given the elusive nature of the bugs and their tendency to hide in inaccessible areas, targeted treatments that reach these spots are essential for successful eradication. This requires a more sophisticated, environmentally-conscious approach that goes beyond surface-level spraying and addresses the underlying behaviour and biology of bugs.

Why are people buying supermarket bed bug sprays if they don’t work? Is it just because they’re easy to get, cheaper, or do you think people don’t know about better options?
Hi Priya. People buy supermarket bed bug sprays mainly for convenience—they’re easy to grab while shopping and feel like a quick fix. The lower price is also appealing, especially when dealing with a sudden infestation.
However, many don’t realize these sprays often only work if they directly contact bed bugs, offering a temporary solution rather than a lasting one. Most people simply aren’t aware of better, long-lasting options that can save time, money, and hassle in the long run. Regards Tony
Hi! Great article! Question if I may.....🤔
Why do bed bug sprays seem to work at first but then stop working? And how do you actually keep bed bugs from coming back? 🪳🦂🦗
Cheers!
Hey Bella!
Glad you liked the article! 😊
Bed bug sprays seem to work at first because they kill the bugs they make direct contact with, but they don’t reach all those hidden spots where bed bugs hide. Plus, over time, bed bugs can build up a resistance, making the sprays less effective.
To keep them from coming back, you need a complete approach—something that kills bed bugs instantly and creates a long-term barrier. Our isolation method does just that. It uses steam for instant results and Diatomaceous Earth powder to keep them from reaching your bed again.
Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions. 😊
Cheers! Tony
Let’s say you ignore all those health risks and even the fact that your house will definitely stink for a long time, but it will be for nothing because those sprays don’t kill all bed bugs because, as you said, they can’t reach all areas. Your Bed Bug Killer is the most effective thing I tried and the fact that it didn’t cost me an arm and a leg it makes it even more awesome.
Thanks for providing a non toxic bed bug treatment. I hated the thought of using toxic chemicals in my bedroom.
You can also add to the list that many of them smell really bad and the smell seems to stick to everything for months. That plus the fact that they don't seem to actually get rid of the bugs they seem pointless to me.
Hi Alex
Your completely correct, that's why we registered Bed Bug Killer powder here in Australia :)

Bed bug sprays are a big no-no in our house because I have asthma. I’ve used some natural remedies like bean leaves and noticed some improvements but didn’t manage to get rid of them for good. I will try your DE product and see if it works for me as well.
Hi Gregory
Bean leaves are good but they stop working as soon as they start to wilt. Bed Bug Killer powder is much more effective because it lasts for many years to kill bed bugs.
